Rainbow Chan’s third album, The Bridal Lament, is the next evolution of a major new chapter in her artistry. First developed as a solo theatrical work presented at Liveworks Festival, OzAsia, Arts House and Riverside Theatres with Sydney Festival, The Bridal Lament draws on Chan’s Weitou ancestry (the first settlers of Hong Kong) and reimagines a historical pre-marital ritual, known as the bridal lament, in which brides publicly wept and sang before leaving their families. In her hands, these songs of grief and resilience formed the basis for a striking body of work connecting ancestral ritual with contemporary pop, performance and storytelling.
