Magnetic South was started in 2017 by Dave Lang and Paul Rigby, both Melbourne music-scene heads with extensive experience in retail, manufacturing, distribution, label management, etc., who wanted to create a distribution avenue for under-represented Australian independent music. The motto would be and remains: GREAT AUSTRALIAN INDEPENDENT MUSIC FOR GREAT AUSTRALIAN INDEPENDENT STORES.

Over the years it has evolved, releasing titles on in-house labels, looking after some of the land's finest indie imprints and even getting a Top 5 LP in the ARIA charts in 2021 with The Hard-Ons. 

In 2026, we are launching the Eminent Vinyl and Golden Debris labels, and figure it's time to get the web site really happening. This is for stores to order from us (this aspect of the site is forthcoming), but also so we can deal directly with the public.
